The rapidly growing data demand, driven by machine learning, cloud computing, virtual reality and high definition media streaming, means that existing multi-mode optical fibre infrastructure has reached its capacity limit. Multi-mode optical fibres are limited in their capacity and reach. They have found extensive use as backbones in large buildings and multi-building Data Centres campuses such as Schools, Hospitals, Shopping Centres, etc. Their widespread use is due to their relatively low cost, in particular with respect to endpoint hardware. To date costly re-cabling, resulting in building works and service interruptions, has been required in order to upgrade the fibre capacity.

Single-mode performance across multi-mode fibre.

Modular Photonics’ technology relies on selective mode excitation or mode conditioning. Multi-mode fibres support a large number of propagation modes – our technology accesses individual modes, avoiding modal dispersion, and enabling single-mode fibre performance across high speed multi-mode optical fibre.

OMPlex-R by Modular Photonics therefore allows for state-of-the art single-mode transceivers to be operated with the legacy multi-mode fibre links allowing for up to 1000x improvement in the Data Rate at 1/10th the cost of recabling (based on an underground link).The OMPlex-R series is suitable for OM1, 2, 3 and 4 fibre and has been validated using up to 100G-LR4 transceivers for fast multi-mode data transmission.
