The MCMUX series are compact and ultra-low loss fan-in and fan-out devices for connecting to multicore fibres. The MCMUX devices are offered for commercially available 4 and 7-core multicore fibre or can be customized to client supplied multicore fibre. The devices are optimized for low insertion loss, low crosstalk and low return losses across common telecommunications bands. Applications include high density data centre interconnects, fibre sensing and space-division multiplexing.

High Performance Multicore Fibre Fanouts
Modular Photonics offers O-band and S,C & L-band compatible ultra-low loss multicore fibre fan-in and fan-out devices. We offer custom solutions for most multicore fibres including heterogenous multicore fibre.
MCMUX
The MCMUX series of multicore fibre fanouts offer low insertion losses, low crosstalk and low return losses across common telecommunications wavelength bands (1250 -1650 nm).
The inputs are standard single-mode fibre (G657A1) that are connectorized with SC/UPC or LC/UPC connectors (but can be user-specified). The devices are packaged in a rigid aluminium casing, resulting in a robust and compact device for use in various telecommunications applications. The key features of MCMUX are:
- Compact & Robust 3D Waveguide Photonics Integrated Circuit.
- Suitable for Data Centre Interconnects, Fibre Sensing, SDM.
- High volume and scalable production using wafer-scale fabrication.
- Wideband (1250-1650 nm) Performance across O, S+C+L Bands.
- MCMUX is available for 4 and 7 core multicore fibres. Note: Custom MCMUX devices are available for >20 cores as well as for heterogenous cores. Custom fan-outs for entire multicore fibre arrays are also possible.
- Ultra-low Insertion Loss <0.5 dB.
- Low Return Loss < – 50 dB.
- Low Core-to-Core Crosstalk < -40 dB.
- Low Polarization Dependent Loss < 0.1 dB.
Modular Photonics products are assembled using industry standard alignment and pigtailing processes, allowing for reliable and low-loss connections for operation in telecommunications environments. Enabled by Modular Photonics’ proprietary 3D waveguide inscription process which allows for high-volume and scalable wafer-scale fabrication, the devices are virtually free of polarization dependent losses.
Note: MCMUX devices can be customized to client supplied multicore fibres.

What is the MCMUX Series?
The MCMUX Series is a family of ultra‑low‑loss multicore fibre fanouts designed for operation across the 1250–1650 nm telecommunications band. They are built using Modular Photonics’ proprietary 3D waveguide inscription process, which delivers:
- Extremely low insertion loss
- Negligible polarisation‑dependent loss
- Low core‑to‑core crosstalk
- High mechanical robustness using telecom‑grade pigtailing processes
What core counts are available?
The core counts available are:
- 4‑core MCMUX
- 7‑core MCMUX
Other core counts available on request.
What connector options are supported?
Single‑mode fibre connectors:
- SC‑UPC
- LC‑UPC
Other connectors available on request.
What wavelengths can I order?
There are two standard wavelength bands:
- O‑band
- S, C & L bands
Other wavelengths are available on request.
What makes MCMUX fanouts different from other suppliers?
- Ultra‑low IL due to 3D waveguide inscription
- Virtually zero PDL
- Telecom‑grade pigtailing for long‑term stability
- High power handling (300 mW per port)
- Customisable core count, wavelength, and connectors
This positions MCMUX as a premium‑performance fanout compared with offerings from other suppliers. The MCMUX is available in large volume orders.
