Mode Multiplexers – LPMUX Series

Space-Division Multiplexing has grown remarkably over the last few years. SDM typically involves using the different modes of few- or multi-mode optical fibres as unique data channels such that the capacity of the optical fibre can be scaled. One of the key challenges with this approach is finding a practical way of actually exciting and separating the fibre modes.

The mode multiplexers developed by Modular Photonics overcome this challenge with market-leading performance. They can be used for Research & Teaching in space-division multiplexing, fibre sensing and nonlinear optics.

The LPMUX series of multiplexers are based on integrated tapered mode couplers allowing for several standard single-mode inputs to be selectively converted into the individual LP modes of a few- or multi-mode fibre. The LPMUX mode multiplexers allow for low loss, high mode-selectivity and ultra-wideband performance beyond the telecommunications bands. The entry-level LPMUX3 multiplexer can be used for multiplexing or demultiplexing of the LP01, LP11a and LP11b modes.

Benefits

The LPMUX Series of mode multiplexers offer state-of-the-art performance in terms of all key performance metrics. The LPMUX3-1550 device allows for cost-effective multiplexing of the LP01, LP11a and LP11b modes of a few-mode fibre across the S+C+L bands. The insertion losses are typically around 1-2 dB, the crosstalk is as low as -25 dB, and the mode extinction ratios are > 18 dB.

The inputs are standard single-mode fibre (SMF-28e+) that are connectorized with FC/PC connectors (but can be user-specified). The output few-mode fibre is commercially-available Dual-mode fibre, allowing for ‘plug and play’ use. The devices are packaged in a rigid aluminium casing, resulting in a robust and compact device for use in various mode multiplexing and quantum applications.

  • Compact Integrated Device
  • Suitable for High-Power Applications (tested to 1 W CW)
  • Wideband Performance (beyond S+C+L Bands).
  • Note: Custom Wavelength Ranges also possible (600-1700 nm).
  • > 18 dB Mode Coupling Ratios.
  • > 18 dB Mode Extinction Ratios.
  • Insertion Loss ~1-2 dB.
  • Polarization Dependent Loss < 0.1 dB.

Modular Photonics products are assembled using industry standard alignment processes, allowing for reliable and low-loss connections for operation in telecommunications environments.

Note: Devices operating within custom wavelength ranges can also be ordered (between 600 -1700 nm).
